RELATED TOPICS: SHIPS
When ship modelers build aircraft carriers, they usually look for aircraft in the scale of their model. René Hieronymus worked the other way around - in his teens, he dreamed of building a ship to go with his 1/72 scale aircraft.

So begins the account of René Hieronymus' incredible model of the USS Sangamon, a World War II escort carrier. Not only did it tax available space at René's Austrian home, but the size of the project pushed us for space in Great Scale Modeling 2009! You can read the rest of the story in GSM, but this brief walk-through should give you an idea of the grand scope of this massive project.
As the "keel" is laid, René's wife gets her first glimpse of the model and questions his sanity.
René didn't argue. "It really was very large," he admits.
All of René's scratchbuilding skills came into play, including making his own photoetched-metal details.
During the 5-year-plus project, "build in progress" was René's contribution to several model shows.
In the end, 28 aircraft …
… and more than 400 modified figures crowded the deck of René's Sangamon.
