Jayne’s Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley is 1/35 scale and 100% scratchbuilt except for the sailor, which is a Tamiya FAMO figure.

This dramatic aft view shows the sub’s rudimentary rudder. There’s some debate whether the Hunley used a two- or three-blade propeller, but most sources agree on three, thus Dan’s choice. Check out the texture on the prop here.

Jayne gave the model to his photographer friend Chuck Stewart to display. Stewart marvels at Jayne’s work and notes the sub was simply a fun “filler” project between Dan’s various cutaway builds.

"His ‘just for fun’ projects are my ‘never in a million years could I build that’ project,” says Chuck.

“Staying with my rule of modeling cutaways only in 1/32 scale left only one kit at the time: the old Revell nasty from the 1960s,” Dan says.

Far from the state of the hobby, Dan corrected the fuselage’s shape and thoroughly detailed the model with aftermarket and scratchbuilt parts.

Dragon’s Jagdpanther Ausf G got a scratchbuilt engine, engine compartment, fighting compartment, and Eduard photoetched metal before Dan beat it up.

This was one of 10 dioramas he built which represented a fascinating time at the end of the war when smashed and abandoned German war machines littered the battlefield.

"Examining these mangled steel wrecks can really bring home the destructive nature of war," Dan says. "Sure, a German Tiger looks cool with its huge 88mm gun. But what does it look like after being struck by a 150mm round?”

Dan modified Italeri’s sWS halftrack to mount a 37mm FlaK gun. He added a Calibre 35 resin engine, tin fenders, and Eduard photoetched metal, and scratchbuilt the cab interior and a cargo bed complete with drop gates. The gun and mount are from Tamiya.

The Soviet Union’s MiG-17 started as Trumpeter’s 1/32 scale kit (No. 02206) with Eduard details (set No. 32051).

During the eight-week build, Dan used the superbly detailed cutaway drawings in An Illustrated Anatomy of the World’s Fighters (Zenith, ISBN 978-0-7603-1124-0), as well as photos in Warbird Tech Volume 40: Mikoyan Gurevich MiG-15 (Specialty, ISBN 978-1-58007-081-2). 

For this F-86 Sabre, Dan started with Hasegawa’s 1/32 scale F-86 (No. 08060) and used Eduard photoetched metal (sets No. 32027 and 32028) for some details.

“I dove into the project by cutting open both left fuselage halves with a Dremel (motor tool),” Dan says. Then he scratchbuilt the port wings and horizontal stabilizer, internal framing for the fuselage, and all of the internal equipment.

Dan built Tamiya’s 1/350 scale Bismarck as it looked shortly before her final voyage, adding tiny crew figures and veneered, scratchbuilt decks detailed with photoetched metal.

The mighty Bismarck’s hull made it to the Atlantic floor largely intact. Dan removed parts of the superstructure and the main turrets, detailing the spaces with styrene and metal.

It took Dan five months to construct this cutaway from Academy’s 1/32 scale F/A-18C Hornet. Dan’s modeling experience prepared him for pitfalls like poorly molded main landing gear. He scratchbuilt new gear from styrene stock.

Dan Jayne is no stranger to Revell-Monogram’s 1/28 scale Fokker Dr.I. He has already built the kit several times. But this time he decided to go one step further and create one of his renowned cutaway versions of the historical aircraft.

Dan chose to cover his Fokker with Battle Axes’ five color WWI lozenge camouflage and used Solvaset to make the decals settle down and behave.
