Below are this week's selection of fantastic models:
Bill Horton
West Hartford, Connecticut
Bill built HobbyBoss’ 1/48 scale Lockheed F-80C Shooting Star, dialing up the volume with a resin seat and wheels from True Details. Inside the cockpit is a photoetched-metal detail set from Eduard. Bill finished it with Testors Chrome Silver and other Alclad II colors.
Stephen Wickware
Pembroke, Ontario, Canada
Apparently, Stephen had quite the struggle with this 1/12 scale Vincent Black Shadow from Revell. “The chrome tree had degraded over time, and while some pieces were missing from the sealed bag, others were broken. It was a challenging build, but, with some patience and a bit of scratchbuilding, the result is reasonable. I love building vintage motorcycles because everything is exposed.” Well done, Stephen.
Gian Montecalvo
North Providence, Rhode Island
Gian finished his Takom 1/35 scale Mark IV Female World War I tank with acrylics, pigments, and pastels. He made new wire rungs for the rear ladder. “I replaced the kit tracks with Friulmodel tracks,” Gian says. “Considering the amount of work that would have gone into the kit tracks, I think I saved what little is left of my sanity.”
Brad Hair
Broken Arrow, Oklahoma
Brad wanted the alien creature from the 2005 War of the Worlds remake. Luckily, Pegasus Models made one in 1/8 scale! He glued the joints together with Aves Apoxie sculpt and painted the base and alien with Tamiya acrylics.
Jeremy Coleman
Wiltshire, England
Jeremy built this Airfix 1/72 North American Mustang Mk.IV out of the box. He finished it with pre-and post-shading, as well as washes of Tamiya Smoke on the machine gun and exhaust.
James De Pietro
West Deptford, New Jersey
“I have always admired commercial fishing boats,” says James. To build one he remembered seeing while growing up in New Jersey, James chose a Lindberg 1/60 scale shrimp boat. He airbrushed most of the boat with Tamiya paints. The deck received two different shades of brown artist oil paints, mixed and blended with a cloth. He made the fishing net from a hair net, and the net floats are wooden beads from a craft jewelry store. For weathering and rust are pastel chalks. “Many of the ideas for finishing the shrimp boat came from the pages of FineScale Modeler. I have been an avid reader for many years.” Glad to hear it, James!
Daniel Duna
Newport News, Virginia
Daniel says it was a pleasure to paint Young Miniatures 1/10 scale Goguryeo Heavy Cavalry Officer. After putting together the resin likeness of a military man from the 5th century AD, he painted with Vallejo, Citadel, and Tamiya acrylics, as well as Testors enamels.
Andrew Novikov
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Wanting another piece of armor in his collection, Andrew built Tamiya’s 1/35 scale Marder III. To boost the detail, he added photoetched-metal details including a new barrel and new track links.
Mark Linkiewicz
Claremont, New Hampshire
Mark built Monogram’s 1/24 scale 1950 Ford pickup out of the box, except he turned the front wheels by cutting the axles and rejoining them at a different angle. “The paint scheme is strictly fantasy,” he says. “I have no idea if Gulf service stations painted their trucks like this, but it seemed plausible.” The seat in the cab is covered with a Mexican blanket, which is actually a printed image Mark found online. Mark sealed the ink with clear lacquer and then soaked the paper in diluted white glue to soften it. The chrome parts were given a coat of flat clear lacquer to give them a dull, aged look. He weathered with artist oils.
Cetin Sarf
Ankara, Turkey
Cetin created this World War II diorama out of a Dragon 1/72 scale SdKfz 164 Nashorn tank and a brass Mini World MG-42 machine gun. Along with resin accessories, Cetin also created many scratchbuilt details. Orion figures and a Revell dog complete the scene.
