Pros: Great detail, positionable hatches, glueable one-piece tracks, easy to build
Cons: Styrene tracks too long, holes in bottom of hull
Dragon has added the last version of the Sturmgeschutz to its 1/72 scale lineup. It features scribed tread plates, separate tools, remote-controlled machine gun, three-piece road wheels, and a set of national markings. The all-color-photo instructions include exploded-view diagrams, parts maps, and color and marking directions. I noticed the paint chart now includes Testor Model Master enamel color numbers in addition to the usual Gunze Sangyo lines.

Two holes mar the centerline of the bottom of the hull. These are likely for use in mounting factory-painted (Can Do) models to their package cases, but true modelers may want to cover them. The separate centers and tires made painting the road wheels easy.

Mounting the suspension and road wheels was straightforward. Test fitting the one-piece tracks, revealed too much sag. I removed two links per track, and this fixed the problem. These glueable tracks make adjustments like this easy.

Overall, the detail is good for this scale, even including the separately molded tools. The shield for the remote-control machine gun is thick, but anything thinner would be too fragile to handle.

I airbrushed the model with Floquil depot buff. All of the wood-handled tools were painted with Tamiya brown and a coat of Tamiya clear orange on top for a realistic look. Weathering was done with an oil wash.

My reference for this project was Sturmgeschutz & Its Variants by Walter J. Spielberger. The finished model scales close to published dimensions. It took only about 10 hours to finish. The great detail and easy-to-build construction means this model has a lot going for it.
