Look closely at this custom AMT 1/25 scale 1961 Mercury Monterey by Rick Papp. It’s got T-bird front and rear end treatments that appear so natural you may not notice. On the other hand, that asymmetrical windshield is very custom and very hard to miss. The classy finish is now-discontinued Model Master Dark Cherry Metallic.

The Detroit Autorama, March 2-4, 2024, at Huntington Place in downtown Detroit is an incredible environment to have a model car contest. Just steps away, full-size custom and race cars were on display, including the high-dollar rods competing for the Ridler Award. This year saw the 71st annual Autorama, and the model car contest has a long history to accompany it, going back to the early 1960s. The roots of this model contest include the Detroit MPC regionals running from 1969 to 1979. This year’s show brought out some fine model cars and tough competition.
