Because Joseph replaced the ships boats with ones made from white metal, he was concerned that the ship’s plastic davits wouldn’t hold up to the added weight. He replaced the kit’s davits with metal ones purchased from BlueJacket. To mount the davits to the hull, Joseph used brass ringbolts for the lower fittings and fashioned upper fittings from sheet styrene.

Sunk by the USS Kearsarge off the coast of France in 1864, the CSS Alabama was a shark among lesser fish during its 22-month cruise. In his two-part story (July and September 2012 FineScale Modeler) Joseph Bossert resurrects Alabama using Revell’s 1/96 scale kit, scratchbuilt and aftermarket parts, and some pieces recovered from an abandoned wooden-ship kit. 

Here Joseph installs davits, coal scuttles, cannonballs, and photoetched-metal sweeps.
