Officially designated the CF-188, the Royal Canadian Air Force McDonnell Douglas CF-18 Hornet, a variant of the F/A-18 Hornet, began replacing the CF-104 Starfighter, CF-101 Voodoo, and CF-116 Freedom Fighter in 1982. Early deliveries were basically identical to the F/A-18A and B versions. However, in the early 2000s, Canada implemented the Incremental Modernization Program for CF-18s and began upgrading to the F/A-18C and -18D standards, which continued after Boeing’s merger with McDonnell Douglas. Canada has employed CF-18s in conflicts around the world, including the Gulf War, in the skies over former Yugoslavia in the late 1990s, and over Iraq in the 2010s. The CF-18 Hornet is slated to be replaced by the F-35 Lightning II.
