Len Woodruff
Frisco, Texas
To model the 1966 Le Mans Ford GT40 Mk.II, Len painted a 1/24 scale Fujimi kit MCW Acadian Blue and eschewed decals on the fenders, deciding to mask and paint instead. He achieved the glass-smooth finish with a clear urethane topcoat.
Claude Jones
Weston, Texas
Taking a 1/25 scale Revell 1967 Camaro, Claude updated it to represent the ’68 Camaro he drove while he was in high school. Lucky guy! He airbrushed with Dupli-Color lacquers, weathered the chassis underneath, switched out the transmission, and detailed the engine.
Curtis Sanchez
Princeton, Texas
This 1951 Henry J rolls on aluminum wheels with a scratchbuilt chassis and resin 959 motor. Far from just an out-of-the-box build of Revell’s 1/24 scale kit, Curtis gave his drag racer a custom paint job with Dupli-Color automotive paints sprayed directly from the can.
Mike Stucker
Sugar Land, Texas
Built box stock, Mike’s Revell 1/24 scale BMW M3 DTM wears Gravity Deutsche Post Yellow with livery and carbon fiber from Tailor Made Decals and Scale Motorsports. He painted Tamiya spray lacquers on the interior and sealed the exterior under a coat of Pledge Floor Gloss.
Dennis E. Satterwhite
Lubbock, Texas
Dennis rolled up with this 1960 Mercury Parklane convertible built from a 1/25 scale AMT kit. He coated the model with Tamiya Bright Red from the spray can, finished the interior with Model Master Dark Tan, painted details by hand, and picked out the brightwork with Bare-Metal Foil.
Gary Curry
Wichita Falls, Texas
Splash Paints bring Gary’s 1/24 scale Revell 2017 Le Mans Ford GT to life. He built the model out of the box, focusing on a clean replica of the Le Mans Team’s No. 69 car. We’d say he succeeded in just that!
Daniel Hollingsworth
Plano, Texas
The four-door 1967 Impala played a huge role in the TV show Supernatural, and Daniel does it justice with his replica built from the AMT 1/25 scale kit. He added valve stems, spark-plug wires, seat belts, and 3D-printed and scratchbuilt hunter tools and finished with Tamiya spray paints.
David Green
Sugar Land, Texas
Tamiya Light Green lacquer makes David’s Aoshima 1/24 scale Lamborghini Huracan Performante pop! To get that bright finish, he sprayed a coat of white primer first, then came the Tamiya paints all straight from the spray cans. No arguing, this Lambo is an attention-getter!
Wes Salazar
Wentzville, Missouri
Custom car modeler extraordinaire Wes Salazar showed up with his lowered 1962 Impala. JPS wheels sit tucked up under the body and an LSX motor rests under the hood with machined pulleys and air stacks. He primed and painted with Splash Nightfall Grey, clear-coated, cut the finish, and then buffed.
Terry Love
Plano, Texas
Terry’s 1969 Dodge Dart screams in with a Tamiya Chrome Yellow finish and depicts a Trans-Am racer of the era. Built chiefly box stock, Terry made the interior roll cage and floors.
Brian Kirby
Denison, Texas
Wanting to model a “cool, run-about cruiser,” Brian hit upon Tamiya’s 1/24 scale Austin Cooper S. He added full interior detail with carpeting and wired the engine. Inside, he added replicas of model kit boxes, a teddy bear, cigarettes and lighter, and a cell phone.
Kenny Gregory
Sapulpa, Oklahoma
We can’t help but admire the patina on Kenny’s Moebius 1/25 scale 1966 Ford F100 Flareside. Kenny built his model mostly box stock, but he added spark-plug wires under the hood and basswood to dress up the bed. For the weathering, Kenny turned to AK Interactive colors and employed the hair-spray technique to chip the Tamiya paint.
Larry Litborski
Garland, Texas
Larry painted his Tamiya 1/24 scale Lotus Europa with decanted Tamiya Italian Red and Pure White, which he mixed with Mr. Color Leveling Thinner before airbrushing. He turned to Indycals for the gold leaf decals. Sharp-looking Lotus, Larry!
Tony Jenkins
Irving, Texas
Tony combined parts from dragster and Funny Car kits to model his Altered-class dragster. He wired the engine and added fuel lines. For the finish, he primed, painted with Tamiya spray paints, and then polished.
Rev Rozell
Sanger, Texas
You don’t see many scale model cars painted completely freehand with paintbrushes, but that’s exactly with Rev did with his Revell 1/25 scale Ford Bronco. He applied acrylic colors with a brush and then dry-brushed to dirty up his rally competitor.
Edwin Silva
Salem, Massachusetts
Even under the tarp and in decrepit condition, we immediately recognized the lines of an International Scout. Left unattended, Edwin modeled what years of abuse from the natural elements would do to the Scout with layers of acrylic washes. The windshield is a cell phone screen protector.
Jim Alexander
Granbury, Texas
Jim always wanted to own a Porsche Boxter, so he decided to build one for himself! Taking the Revell 1/25 scale 1993 Boxter kit, he built it box stock and painted it with Testors spray lacquers right from the can.
Jeff Brown
Cedar Hill, Texas
Can it be a gasser if it doesn’t run on gas? Jeff puts the question to the test with “Mr. Sparky,” his Revell 1/25 scale Willys gasser converted into an EV. He smoothed the front clip and added a 3D-printed electric motor. He painted with PlastiKote Stainless Steel from the spray can and sealed it under Tamiya Semigloss Clear.
Raul Montelongo
Houston, Texas
Raul hit the gas with his AMT 1/25 scale 1966 Chevy Nova Pro Stock. He achieved his superb paint job with Testors Hemi Orange lacquer under Tamiya Gloss Clear. Raul detailed the engine with Detail Master wires, kicked up the chrome with Bare-Metal Foil, and sourced contingencies and markings from Fred Cady Decals.
Dedrick Brady
Dallas, Texas
Is it a jalopy or a sleeper? Dedrick wouldn’t say. But what he does tell us is this Revell 1/25 scale 1950 Oldsmobile coupe is painted PPG Sunset Yellow and then he went to town with browns, rusty reds, and oranges to model a car burnt by the California desert.
John W. Kress
San Antonio, Texas
John built his Dodge Magnum SRT8 concept from two Revell 1/25 scale kits. He base-coated with Tamiya White Primer and then painted with Tamiya Yellow directly from the can. John says he built this model to represent how he thinks the Magnum should have been: two doors like the Chevy Nomad.
