Jim Johnson chopped the top off a Revell 1/25 scale 1932 Ford three-window coupe and went with different wheels and tires than were provided in the kit. He sprayed the body with Tamiya primer and airbrushed Testors Root Beer lacquer over it.
Ben Neu turned his AMT 1/25 scale 1965 Buick Riviera into a mild custom and painted it with custom PPG colors.
Dean Kuitunen removed the side trim on his AMT 1/25 scale Ford Thunderbird convertible and raided an AMT Parts Pack for chrome wheels and whitewall tires. He airbrushed the T-bird Tamiya Black lacquer and sealed it with Omni two-part clear. The remaining brightwork was covered in Bare-Metal Foil.
Adam Folk built an original SMP 1/25 scale annual 1960 Chevy Apache box stock. But what a finish! He masked and painted lace patterns of Testors Purplicious and Createx Candy 2O over a base of Tamiya Pearl White and Testors Diamond Dust. Adam brought high gloss to the party with 2K clear. All the chrome parts were stripped and repainted.
Richard Petty’s No. 43 Plymouth blew the doors off the 1967 NASCAR season with a record-setting campaign of 27 wins—10 of those in a row. Torben Rothgeb removed the emblems and widened the wheel openings of a stock Revell/Monogram 1/25 scale kit to get the look of “The King’s” ride. He detailed with parts from other kits, sprayed the body with TruMatch paint, and marked it with Slixx decals. Torben made the head and taillight covers from an aluminum soda can.
Rod Maskiw opened and hinged the doors of a Moebius Models 1/25 scale 1969 Ford F-100 pickup, but that was only the beginning. He smoothed the firewall and scratchbuilt the inner fender wells, detailed the engine and engine bay, and installed custom bucket seats from a Shelby Series 1 kit. Rod painted his custom pickup body Bob’s Paint Midnight Blue and the chassis Grabber Blue.
This AMT 1/25 scale ’67 Ford Galaxie wears metallic silver under three coats of metallic green. Then Tony Thoren laid down three coats of Dupli-Color Clear before polishing. Tony added an SOHC motor and wired it to complete his late-60s street machine.
Tom Thoren’s AMT 1/25 scale ’55 Chevy step-side pickup boasts a wired engine, Chevy rally wheels, and a third brake light below the rear window. Tom finished the body with turquoise enamel spray paint directly from the can and polished it to a high shine.
The “Rapid Rodent” started as an AMT 1/25 scale Ford F-100. Randy Solma transformed it into a pull tractor with aluminum pull weights and carburetors, 3D-printed pipes, and Hot Wheels monster-truck tires and rims. He wired the battery and motor with sewing thread.
Andy Rocheford souped up his Revell 1/25 scale 1928 Ford Model A with a flathead engine and Columbia two-speed rear axle from a Revell 1940 Ford. The wheels and headlights came from a Revell 1930 Model A. Andy spray-painted the body, chassis, and engine, and brush-painted details.
“Field of Dreams” comes by way of Mark Gustafson. He used AMT, MPC, and Monogram kits to build the cars and used plenty of parts from his spares to accomplish details—no aftermarket here! He gathered sticks for the fence posts from his backyard and made the barbed wire by hand. “The model shows a gentleman thinking of his youth and dreaming of a future with a hot rod like he had before,” Mark said.
Doug Long added seat belts to his otherwise box-stock build of a NuNu 1/24 scale Volo S40 BTCC super touring race car. He painted the body with Tamiya Pure White lacquer, and the rest of the livery was accomplished with decals. This is a replica of Rick Rydell’s racer in the 1997 British Touring Car Championship series.
Austin Dean brought his Revell 1/25 scale ’66 Chevelle Malibu SS. It sports a custom front end with a twin-turbo 572 ci motor and a Dodge Dart hood scoop. The drag car wears primer out front and Chevy Blue spray paint behind the hood with two coats of clear.
Wesley Dean arrived at the show with an AMT 1/25 scale 1955 Chevy Nomad. He put a resin 527 super-charged big-block engine in the long roof, cut plenty off the frame, fashioned a custom core support, carpeted the interior, and polished the two-tone silver and metallic black finish.
Troy Stahnke lowered the front suspension on his AMT 1/25 scale ’55 Chevy step-side and added a 3D-printed carburetor to the engine. He airbrushed Tamiya Metallic Blue over a gloss black base coat.
Striking in MCW Yellow enamel, Jason Klein’s AMT 1/25 scale 1971 Plymouth Duster has a scratchbuilt roll cage inside and rolls on 3D-printed wheels and tires.
Scott Glatstein upped the detail on his Fujimi 1/24 scale Lamborghini Veneno with Studio 24 carbon-fiber decals and a Hobby Design photo-etched metal detail kit. He airbrushed the aggressive-looking hypercar with Splash Viola Parsifae topped with 2K Clear.
John Robinette sanded off the molding on his AMT 1/25 scale 1955 Chevy gasser body and slid a ’67 Chevelle pro street chassis underneath. He hand-painted the motor, radiator, dash, and front seats, and used 12 cans of Rust-Oleum spray paint to get the patchwork appearance he wanted.
Jim Allen tubbed the rear and lowered the body on his AMT 1/25 scale 1994 Ford F-150 pro street pickup. Built 30 years ago, he painted the racing pickup with Testors spray enamels.
Brady Skog provided new body lines and fenders, a 3D motor, a scratchbuilt roll cage, and a chopped top for his Tamiya 1/24 scale Mercedes 300 SL. He airbrushed Marrone Dino lacquer over Tamiya primer and sealed the “Dino Brown” with Mr. Hobby Super Clear.
Ghost flames burn up the sides of Dan Decko’s Revell 1/25 scale 1956 Chevy Del Ray. He replaced the kit wheels with Deck Car Co. 20-inch steelies, masked for the flames, and painted with Createx colors.
Jeff Johnson provided aftermarket photo-etched metal details and 3D-printed wheels and tires for his 1970 ½ Camaro Baldwin Motion street machine based on an AMT 1/25 scale kit. House of Kolor lacquers complete the package.
David Benson kicked his AMT 1/25 scale 1941 Plymouth coupe into high gear with a Dodge Hellcat Hemi, Revell ’69 Nova front and rear frames, custom interior, and custom head and taillights. He even opened up the kit grille and added Pegasus wheels. David airbrushed the Plymouth’s body with Createx Wicked Pearl Blue over AutoBorne Silver Sealer.
Wyatt Nichols built his Revell 1/25 scale ’29 Model T hot rod out of the box and gave it a primer finish with colorful blue wheels and whitewall tires.
