Toby Halliday’s JoHan 1/25 scale 1962 Chrysler 300 was just a quick, out-of-the-box build for the club display at the car show. He primed the body, painted with Omni automotive lacquer, and picked out the side trim and emblems with Bare-Metal Foil for a showroom look.
Art imitates real life with Ben Neu’s 1/25 scale custom 1954 Ford F-100 pickup, which replicates his full-sized ride! He chopped the front roof and sectioned the hood of an AMT kit, installed a ’57 Ford car dash, fabricated custom parts, and 3D-printed the wheels, all to match the real truck.
Dave Vogt pieced together a jalopy for his dad to go to Pioneer Days, but, sadly, his father died two weeks before the car was completed. Doug, in the same spirit as the full-sized jalopy, used various parts from his spares to re-create the car in 1/25 scale, making many details by hand, including the gun, fishing rod, beer box, traps, and squeeze horns. He kept the original car to cart around his seven granddaughters, who also used it to learn to drive.
A VCG Resin 429 Weekender engine powers Dean Kuitunen’s 1929 Ford roadster rat rod. He painted the wheels Testors Guard Red and Testors Rust on the body. Weathering was accomplished via airbrushing, washes, pastels, and Tamiya pigments.
Paul Seppi built an MPC 1/25 scale ‘71 Dodge Demon box stock. He primed the body and then painted it with spray enamels from the can—no weathering for this showroom beauty.
Calling his custom 1957 T-bird Cotton Candy, John Robinette’s AMT 1/25 scale kit features lines sanded smooth, a 1953 Studebaker front pan grille divider, chrome lower grilles, and 1950 Ford taillights.
Mark Reilly combined a Lindberg 1/32 scale Show Rod and a Pyro 1/32 scale Ford 1915 Pie Wagon for his special street rod. He modified the Pyro body and chassis to fit the Lindberg engine, which he wired and ran brake and fuel lines. That distinctive color is Testors Purple-Licious lacquer spray paint.
“This is my first model,” said Shelly Malarkey of her Revell 1/24 scale 1956 Ford Thunderbird. She primed the body with pink Tamiya Primer and painted it with Tamiya spray paint colors right from the cans, masking to keep the line between the pink and white sharp.
Scott Glatstein’s 1/24 scale 1932 Bugatti Type 55 roadster started as an all white-metal kit. Always looking to turn his models into something more, Scott scratchbuilt the real-wood dash, installed Bugatti wheels from a Monogram kit, and introduced a photo-etched metal steering wheel kit to the mix. That sharp finish comes from Splash Paints Rosso 70 Anni, Semigloss Black, and 2K clear.
Shooting for an old-school hot-rod pickup, Andy Rochefort built a Revell 1/25 scale ‘37 Ford pickup box stock except for a 3D-printed McCulloch supercharger. He simulated the wooden bed with Tamiya Desert Yellow dry-brushed NATO Brown and over-coated with Clear Orange.
Jameson Durk crafted a 1/25 scale 1948 Harley-Davidson Panhead chopper with handmade and 3D-printed parts. His goal was to combine elements of all of his dad’s choppers into one. Jameson painted the tank three times and hand-cut the mask for the bruise finish.
Gary Johnson transformed an AMT 1/25 scale 1937 Chevrolet coupe into a 1937 Pontiac. He moved the headlights to the fenders, scratchbuilt a new grille, and added trim to the hood, all to match his real Pontiac. Gary painted the car with Dupli-Color enamel sprayed from the can over primer, and then sealed it with a clear coat.
Since he was a kid, Dean Warford dreamed of building a custom Chevrolet sedan delivery. He finally did it, starting with a Monogram 1/24 scale Tom Daniel’s Street Fighter 1960 sedan delivery kit, he lowered the suspension, airbrushed a Tamiya Gold base coat, and then sprayed a mix of Clear Orange and Red over the top. He masked around the hood and side panels, added prismatic flakes, and then sealed it under clear red for an unmistakable look.
For his AMT 1/25 scale 1970 1/2 Camaro Z28, Erik Zabel went the extra mile and added engine details. He airbrushed the body MCW Autumn Gold.
Rust-Oleum Tropical Mint and Classic White spray paint dress Kevin Athmann’s enormous 1/16 scale AMT 1955 Chevrolet Nomad. Built box stock, he was just happy to have the big long-roof in his collection.
Ralph Meyer painted his AMT 1/25 scale 1962 Chevrolet Impala SS with an airbrush. The reason for choosing the Impala? Nothing more significant than that he liked it.
How about putting a Corvette engine in a 1969 Chevelle? That’s what Wesley Dean did with his 1/25 scale Revell kit. He painted the body with lacquer direct from the spray can and said, “It’s how I would build a Chevelle if I had one.”
Dan Decko’s Galaxie Limited 1/25 scale 1948 Chevy Aerosedan is a sight to behold. He improved it with a custom foam interior, air-bagged suspension, and a custom paint job that included a Createx Gold base coat and Candy Red and Black Cherry on top.
This stripped-down 1923 Ford roadster came to the show with Steve Wranke. Built from a mix of parts from his spares box, he finished it with spray paint to look like a track-style street racer.
David Benson’s AMT 1/25 scale Mack R685ST truck has aftermarket resin cab lights, rubber mud flaps, and resin head and taillights. David shaved the emblems and modified the rims to use beauty rings. He airbrushed the body with Createx Pearl Blue.
