The Nautilus car from The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie has an unmistakable steampunk appearance. Andy Lowery built a Rave 1/24 scale kit, but wanted to take the model further than what the plastic out of the box provided. He cut open the hood and installed an Allison engine inside and named it Leviathan — appropriate, considering that this car belongs to the infamous Captain Nemo.

For the 1957 campaign, the D50s were heavily modified to make Ferrari 801 cars. Largely unsuccessful, the 801s lasted for a single season. Bill Richter built a Revival 1/20 scale D50 kit and finished it as Collins’ winning chariot. And then, to show how much the car changed from one year to the next, he finished a Model Factory Hiro 1/20 scale 801 marked for No. 34 driven by Luigi Musso during the Pescara Grand Prix in 1957. Both were painted Tamiya Italian Red and have photo-etched metal wire wheels.

To turn an AMT 1/25 scale 1935 Chevy sedan into a modified racer, Ken Denza replaced the wheels and tires, called in a new body from Big Donkey Resin and added the air dam on the hood, installed plenty of lines and hoses, swapped in a new intake manifold and carburetor from his spares, and attached a windshield. A pair of Dodge Darts rest (rust) in peace in Tim Brown’s Darts in the Backyard diorama. He used a pair of Revell 1/25 scale kits for the cars, opened the trunk on one, and added a milk crate, chain, and other detritus one might find in an old, forgotten car. Tim recycled an old award for the diorama base, hand-punched more than 1,000 leaves for the scene, and employed AK Interactive pigments and Ammo washes for weathering. The salt and hair-spray techniques scratched away and chipped faded paint on the cars and sheet-metal fence.
