In the December 2010 FSM, I showed how to re-create natural-metal finishes with kitchen foil. Here’s a little more about using Microscale Metal Foil adhesive:

1. I have never found it necessary to thin the Microscale Metal Foil Adhesive. A bottle lasts forever; I foiled two 1/32 scale models with one bottle.

2. Use a ½”-wide soft brush to apply the adhesive directly to the foil. I have not found it necessary to prep the foil unless there is some residue from graining. If there is residue, it can be removed with a soft cloth dipped in isopropyl alcohol.

3. On larger pieces of foil, you can use a Bondo knife to spread the adhesive into a thin, uniform layer. Brush marks and pooling must be eliminated.

4. Apply the foil as soon as the adhesive turns clear. (It is white out of the bottle.) Make sure the model is clean. If adhesive is left to dry before use, it will not flow from under the foil as it should.

5. Smooth the foil starting from the center of the piece and working out toward the edges. Some adhesive will come out from under the foil.

6. A ½”, rounded, hard balsa dowel can be used to smooth smaller pieces of foil. You can add detail by tracing panel lines and rivet detail with a toothpick.

7. Remove excess adhesive on the model using isopropyl alcohol on a cotton ball or soft cloth. If the foil has been on the model for more than a week, it is there for good. Until then, it can be lifted and replaced.
