I’ve often heard modelers say they use silver or black paint or markers to check their work while filling and smoothing a seam. I’ve found that a quick wipe of the seam with a cotton swab, cotton ball, or cloth dipped in isopropyl alcohol will do as good a job. While it’s wet, it will show you exactly what the end result will be without having to clean a brush, deal with distracting paint stripes, or worry about an inconsistent painting surface. A bonus is that it removes any sanding dust from the joint and helps keep your model clean and ready for painting.
