Beyond dry-fitting

As all modelers soon find out, dry-fitting parts is critical to minimizing filling and sanding for proper fit.

While updating my World War I biplane collection, I took dry-fitting to another level. For lack of a better term, I call it a “wet build.”  I begin construction using tried and true Elmer’s glue. This primary build reveals imperfections with the struts, landing gear, and wing alignment. Corrections can then be made before permanent gluing begins. The glued parts can be disassembled by prying them apart; soaking them in warm water will dissolve stubborn bonds. This wet build will also give insights on potential painting issues. For those of us who think building is the best part of modeling, this process doubles your fun. You build the kit twice!
