SonicMax Slice 10: A Cordless Ultrasonic Cutter Built for Longer Workbench Sessions

Anyone who has spent an evening clipping resin parts off their pour blocks, trimming gates on a long styrene sprue, or squaring up a foam diorama base knows the routine: clip, file, sand, repeat. For builders who use ultrasonic cutters to speed up that part of the process, there’s a familiar frustration too. Most cordless models handle a few minutes of cutting well, then start to bog down as they heat up, with output dropping or the tool shutting itself off just as you’re getting into a rhythm on a big build.

SonicMax, a new entrant in the tool space, is trying to close that gap with the Slice 10, a wireless ultrasonic cutter now funding on Kickstarter. It’s the company’s first product, SonicMax says it rebuilt the ultrasonic and cooling system from the ground up specifically to hold up over longer, uninterrupted sessions at the bench.

What’s Different Under the Hood

The Slice 10 runs its blade at a 40 kHz ultrasonic frequency, which is standard for this class of tool. What SonicMax highlights instead is the transducer’s Q factor, a measure of how efficiently the system converts electrical energy into cutting motion rather than heat. The company rates the Slice 10’s transducer above 500, compared with roughly 150 to 250 on typical cordless ultrasonic cutters. In practical terms, a higher Q factor should mean more of the tool’s power reaches the blade as vibration and less gets wasted warming up the housing, which is usually what triggers a thermal shutdown mid-project.

To back that up, active fan cooling manages heat at both the transducer and the blade, and the tool’s output, rated up to 50 watts, is adjusted dynamically rather than run flat-out at all times. A safety cutoff engages if the internal board temperature reaches roughly 80°C. SonicMax reports an internal stress test, run continuously at maximum output, in which the Slice 10 logged about 70 minutes of cutting before depleting a charge, versus roughly 20 minutes on a comparison unit that also cut out repeatedly from overheating. The company is upfront that this is a worst-case benchmark, not a real-world runtime figure, for the start-stop cutting most modelers actually do, SonicMax estimates 2 to 4 hours of use per charge depending on material and power setting.

Battery, Handling, and Display

Power comes from a removable 21700 lithium cell (5,000 mAh, 3.7V) that swaps out in seconds, so a spare battery can keep a session going without waiting on a charger. USB-C pass-through charging at 18 watts is also supported for corded use, and a full charge from empty takes about 70 minutes.

On the handling side, the Slice 10 uses a lift-to-activate sensor rather than a grip switch: pick it up off the bench and it wakes into standby; set it down flat and it powers off. An OLED screen displays battery level, current output, fan status, and any warnings, and a small LED along the blade illuminates the cut line, useful for tracing gate lines on darker resin parts or working inside a shadowed diorama base.

Where It Fits on the Bench

SonicMax lists the Slice 10 as suited to PLA, PETG, and ABS parts, cast and printed resin, EVA and foam board, model-building sheet stock, leather, soft PVC, plastic sheet, and silicone. That range covers a fair amount of what shows up on a modeler’s bench outside the sprue itself: resin garage-kit and aftermarket parts, foam-core or EVA diorama bases, styrene sheet for scratch-building, and soft materials used in figure work or basing.

The Slice 10 measures 260.5 by 28 millimeters and weighs 236 grams, close in size to a fat marker, which should keep it manageable for detail work rather than heavy stock removal. It ships with 10 replacement blades, a blade storage case, a hex key, a USB-C cable, and additional accessories, backed by a one-year limited warranty that excludes blades and normal battery wear.

Availability

The Slice 10 is funding now on Kickstarter through September 10, 2026, with 16 days left as of this writing. The campaign has already passed $115,000 pledged from more than 840 backers, well beyond its original $5,000 goal. Current pricing sits at the Early Bird tier of $119, with the standard Kickstarter price set at $149 ahead of a planned $215 retail price once the campaign wraps.
