I have read FSM tips about holding photoetched-metal frets with tape while cutting so the parts don’t fly away. This has happened to me, but I believe I have found the answer to this problem — tacky beading mats from Beadalon. I found mine at a local craft store. It is a 41⁄4″ x 41⁄4″ blue gel mat.
I gently press the fret onto the mat, making sure it is flat. Then I carefully cut the part from the fret using a new No. 11 blade, making sure to not cut too deep into the mat. I use a wet cloth to wash the mat, and the cut seems to close naturally. It appears that if you do not cut too deeply into the mat, the incision will heal.
