When holding small parts after painting or whilst adhesive sets, I use blocks of Oasis floral foam. You an easily put cocktail sticks, sprues, or other holding devices into it, and it will support a reasonable amount of weight. The blocks are inexpensive and readily available at craft stores. Keep it wrapped in cling film and one block will last years.
