Experimental paint for armor

Between family and work, there’s not a whole lot of time for me to model, let alone practice techniques or experiment with new ones I see in FineScale Modeler. So, to save time, I combine practice with finishing the actual model by using new products, like premixed filters, or new techniques, like the hairspray weathering method, on the bottom side of a tank or AFV. That way, I can base-coat the entire model in one sitting, then experiment on an area that will never see the light of day.

The backs of road wheels and tracks can be easily masked to prevent overlap or overspray. Just be sure that small, easy-to-lose parts like headlight guards and pioneer tools are well-secured and protected! Removing the turret provides a convenient handhold during underside painting and weathering practice.

Of course, today’s high-riding MRAPs are probably not the best subjects for this. But any AFV that sits low to the ground is a perfect candidate for some on-the-model trial runs on the kit’s “B side.”
