While the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association is best known for its big outdoor car shows held all over the country, the group also does its part to promote scale auto modeling. Each show features a model car contest that spectators can check out for free. To enter, simply bring your model in on Friday or Saturday during the show, and you’ll get a pass to come back on Sunday to see if your model won one of the cool awards.
The model car contests are usually hosted by local modelers or local model car clubs and each includes several category awards, such as Coolest Custom and Hottest Hot Rod, but they also present People’s Choice and Best of Show.
But the contest is just one aspect of the support that Goodguys has shown for car modelers. I used to write a model car column for them, too.
To bring new hobbyists into the fold, Goodguys shows have featured Make-’N’-Take programs for kids. In 2019, Auto World became the primary sponsor and supplier of kits for the events, taking over from longtime sponsor Revell.
“We provide Goodguys with snap kits to give out to kids at the show,” says Chad Reid, Auto World’s marketing manager. “It’s an effort to help grow modeling with the younger generation, by letting them get their first shot at building a model right there at the event. As part of our partnership, we also advertise in their publication, giving special deals to Goodguys members.” Auto World gives away a few thousand kits each year. “The Goodguys crew hands them out at the Make-‘N’-Take booths set up at their shows,” Chad explains, “I believe they do around 18 shows a year, handing out a little more than 200 kits at each.”
It is great to see that a club for full-size cars supports the hobby, partnering with a leading manufacturer to spread the fun. Thank you, Goodguys and Auto World!
