ICM has become known for a wide range of 1/35 scale model subjects, including Ford Model Ts and figures. Knowing this, it makes sense ICM would produce this 1/35 scale Model T Firetruck with a four-man crew. The kit includes 208 truck parts (only 158 are for this version) and 56 pieces for the figures. The 16-page instruction booklet includes 57 illustrated assembly steps, a brief Model T history, parts index, and a four-view color painting diagram. Parts are molded in gray and clear plastic. Unfortunately, while the box top shows markings, none are included.

I followed the assembly sequence—mostly—but also built up as many subassemblies as possible. The first 15 assembly steps cover installing the detailed engine and running gear. Molded as one piece, make sure the radiator and front axle are square to the frame because this sets the engine location and hood alignment. The frame rails are integrated into the one-piece fender and subfloor, so you don’t need to worry about alignment here. However, make sure the motor mounts are spaced wide enough to reach the frame.

Rather than attach the plastic tire and wheel assemblies when the instructions suggested, I opted to leave them off until later. I found the one-piece wheels a challenge to paint, but accomplished it with masks made with tape and a circle cutter.

Instead of gluing the firewall (Part A32) to the subfloor (Part A35), I glued it to the floor assembly on top for a good join and checked the floor’s alignment to the fender assembly to ensure everything was square and level before the glue set. Pay attention while assebling the tanks, brackets, and basket to make sure everything lines up with the floor. Lay the multipart hose in the basket with the end lined up with the tank valve as the glue sets.

Finally, I added the lights, ladders, tires, and other small parts to finish the build. Take your time because this can be a trying process.

Moving on, separate instruction page details the firemen assembly. Each man consists of about 12 parts, nicely sculpted with realistic poses. One fireman is carrying a boy, and another, a cat. Assemble the boy and cat first so you can position the arms of the firemen to carry them. I had to switch the boy’s arms so he would fit the fireman. I used putty to blend the seams and painted with Tamiya, Vallejo, and The Army Painter acrylic paints. (The base in the photo did not come with the kit.)

Essentially two kits in one, ICM’s 1/35 scale Model T Firetruck with Crew lives up to the company’s high standards. Yes, I wish it came with decals for the truck and figures, but that can be forgiven with the amount of detail and scale reproduction. ICM’s kits can be challenging, but you can count on an attractive model when completed. Hopefully, ICM will continue to offer more civilian vehicles.
