Using putty and super glue to fill gaps works, but it usually involves a lot of sanding, risking lost details and a ruined model. I recently tried ready-to-use Polyfix fine-surface filler. (It’s available in any hardware store here, at Home Depot and Wal-Mart in the U.S.) One small tub will last for years. If it dries, just add water. This stuff is very cheap and easily fills gaps of all sizes.
Here’s what I do:
1) Apply the filler liberally; like putty, it shrinks somewhat as it dries.
2) Wait until it’s completely dry, usually a few hours depending on the amount applied.
3) Using a moist finger or cotton swab, remove excess Polyfix and sculpt the remainder to the desired shape.
4) Wait until it’s dry, then apply a drop or two of thin super glue. The plaster will suck the liquid glue into the surface and create a protective film. Once dry, you can easily paint over the super glue with either acrylics or enamels.
I’ve had very good results so far and I find that the mess created by the dry plaster is a lot easier to clean up than excess putty or super glue.
