I have read with interest several articles in
FSM on how to super glue photoetched-metal parts to plastic. This bonds well, but I don’t like the possibility of gluing my fingers together or the need for precise placement from the beginning.
Instead, I use Weldbond adhesive to attach metal parts to plastic without the mess and finger-gluing. It is a white paste that dries clear and can be painted and decaled over. I have used it to glue metal to plastic on vertical and horizontal surfaces with no problems. The product allows time to position items. But it does have a longer drying time, so I try to do a couple different areas at one time to allow for this — overnight is good. A thin coat of paste on each part or area with a little set time before bonding works well. I use a piece of glass or ceramic platform for a couple drops at a time, and use various items to apply the adhesive to both parts/area. (Weldbond can be wiped clean off an instrument also.) I found this product was not as messy, and more forgiving than super glue. I have an 8-ounce bottle, and it lasts a good while. Better arts and crafts stores carry it, or it can be ordered at
Blick Art Materials.
