Use brass rod to make a sturdier tail skid

FSM-RT0314_01b

While inspecting the parts for a Wingnut Wings 1/32 scale DH.2, I could see that the tail skid would be way too delicate on the finished model. So, I reinforced it with a segment of 1/32" brass rod. (I prefer rod to wire because it starts out straight, as opposed to coiled.)

With the Wingnut kit part as a guide, I used a pair of needlenose pliers to bend the brass rod to the angles that I needed. Then I snipped the rod to fit.

I fashioned the brass rod so it would mount inside the tail-skid area and remain flush with the surrounding parts. After prepping it with fine sandpaper and an alcohol wipe, I tacked it in place with a drop of super glue to ensure that it was positioned correctly. Then I ran thin super glue along the edges, applying several coats to build up a smooth transition. When the glue was dry, I painted the area to match its surroundings.  The bit of brass adds considerable strength, and if you keep it thin enough it is barely visible after painting.
