RELATED TOPICS: HISTORY
When model manufacturers produce a new kit, almost all of the feedback they get from consumers is through sales figures: good sales, the kit must be OK. They seldom hear directly from the buyers and builders. But now that has changed.

In 1999, FineScale Modeler instituted its "Reader's Choice Awards" to reward the manufacturers for their efforts. The ballot was stitched into an issue of FSM and more than 1,000 readers filled it out and sent it in. (Last year's results were published in the September 1999 issue.) FSM staffers handed awards to the winning manufacturers at the National Model and Hobby Show held in October in Chicago.

The ballot was so successful (and the awards so appreciated) that we've done it again. This year's ballot, for kits released in 1999, was included in the May 2000 FSM. More than 1,200 of you responded and voted for your favorite kits in several categories, including "Kit of the Year" for the best kit overall. FSM's ace intern, Brendan Dooley, tabulated the results, and has just handed me a sealed envelope . . . .

Ahem. And the awards go to . . . .

I don't mean to disappoint, however, I don't think I've ever heard of your magazine. So I checked it out and think it's somewhat expensive. The preparation work for such an undertaking seems daunting and consequently the cost for producing your product seems expensive which reflects in the price of the subscription.

Thinking back to my earlier days, I can say my disinterest in the constant barrage of "old news", probably developed after reading month after month of the same old stuff! Ergo ..... lost subscription! I'm on the verge of approaching the model builders with the following idea: Take the current known information on something like the pyramids and turn it into a model you can "see-through". The same can be done for geological formations, wonders of the world and other things that one's imagination can provide.

I think a change in attitude, the conception of what you job actually is, and your desire to be profitable should be used to impact the model manufacturers. I can remember that one of my last truly enjoyable model builds was when I assembled the "see-through" V-8 engine. Not satisfied with it's stagnant display, I hooked it up to my erector set motor and experimented with different types of drive belts. Had a blast!

BTW, after spending my youth immersed in imaginative crazy projects of my own choosing, I spent the next 35 years in the Aero-Space business inventing and perfecting test, test equipment, devices like actuators, servo valves and "junk" for use in space ... like Cassini and countless other products!
