From the publisher: With German forces being pushed back across Europe in the months after D-Day, the Allies looked to press their advantage. Had it been successful, Operation Market-Garden, a massive airborne assault, could have shortened the war in the West considerably. An armored thrust by the British XXX Corps, in conjunction with the U.S. 82nd and 101st Airborne, were to secure the bridges at Eindhoven and Nijmegen, and the British 1st Airborne and Polish 1st Airborne were tasked with seizing the final bridge at Arnhem to secure the route. However, the 9th and 10th SS Panzer Divisions were nearby and ready to reinforce the local garrison and fend off the Allied assault.
Focusing on the roles of the British and Polish troops, the author examines the operation from its early planning through the early setbacks and its catastrophic conclusion.
