Developed and first produced by Hughes, the AH-64 Apache helicopter and then McDonnell Douglas, the Apache first entered U.S. service in 1986. A twin-turboshaft heli with a tandem cockpit to accommodate a two-member crew, nose-mounted sensors provide target acquisition and night-vision capabilities. Armaments included a 30mm M230 chain gun and four hard points for Hellfire and Stinger rocket pods. In 1997, the U.S. Army took delivery of the more advanced AH-64D Apache Longbow, and Boeing took over production of the hard-to-kill attack chopper. To date, more than 5,000 Apache helicopters have served with the U.S. and 18 other countries, including the UK, Israel, and Saudi Arabia. Here are color photos FineScale Modeler took of a AH-64D Apache at the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) Airventure in July 2024.
