Looking to model his full-size car, Larry Ritz built a 1953 Oldsmobile Rocket 88 using a Monogram 1/24 scale ’57 Chevy hardtop and an MCW resin 1/24 scale 1953 Oldsmobile two-door sedan body — changed into a four-door — and interior. He used many scratchbuilt parts, including the console, trunk panels and details, lights, floor pan, and fender skirts.
Ron Nelson Sr. built an AMT/Ertl 1/25 scale Chevy C-3500 SnapFast Plus kit and customized it with an Iceman Collections frame, a new Chevy motor, and a heavily modified rear suspension. He primed before painting with House of Kolor paint and picking out details with a black wash.
Todd Wingerter built his 1948 1/25 scale Crosley A/A drag car from an AMT 1/25 scale Fiat Double Dragster chassis and Fremont Racing Specialties body. He added fuel lines, made his own decals, and scratchbuilt the push bars, headers, and firewall before airbrushing it Krylon Tangerine.
This Aoshima 1/24 scale Nissan R35 CT-R came from Eric Mayle. He built it box stock and painted it several coats of Turbo Dork Hemogoblin over a black base.
This is Bill Borgen’s Italeri 1/24 scale Willys Jeep MB 1941-2021 (80th anniversary) painted in Tamiya Royal Blue. He added the “Big Top Crew” lettering, a dry-transfer chain hook, a vise, tools, and a tarp. Bill weathered with pigments.
Ron Nelson Jr. brought his sleek, lowriding AMT 1/24 scale Buick Riviera. As you can see, he opened the doors and rear deck, shaved the handles, and fully plumbed the trunk and engine. Ron primed the model, layered on Testors Red, and finished with a silky clear coat.
Patrick Grubish’s AMT 1/25 scale 1970 Sox and Martin Duster sports a hemi, tires, and slicks from his parts box. He also added a cool can, resin hood scoop, and resin Keystone wheels. Pat-rick painted the model with Dupli-Color White Primer and masked it to paint the blue and red panels.
Bob Phillips added a tow rig from an MPC Datsun to his MPC 1/25 scale 1969 Jeep Commando truck. He airbrushed the vehicle with MCW lacquer and lightly weathered it with chalks to make something unexpected.
For his first top fuel dragster, Greg Taylor built a Revell 1/25 scale Shelly Anderson’s Western Auto’s Parts America Havoline top fuel dragster. He masked the model to paint it with Tamiya paints, detailed the engine, and sealed it all under Humbrol Clear.
This Moebius Models 1/25 scale 1965 Ford F-100 Custom Cab came from Mike Garrett, who likes to do a box-stock build of a model kit first to get a feel for how it assembles. He primed, used a white base coat, then masked and sprayed on the light blue from a Tamiya rattle can.
Dave Johnson built and modified a Monogram 1/24 scale 1937 Ford Street Rod. He added an air-conditioning dryer and hoses, an engine and alternator, wiring, seat belts, throttle linkage, and exhaust tips. For the finish, Dave primed, used Testors One Coat Lacquer Purple-Licious, a gloss coat, wet sanded, and polished.
Frank Vetula built this cherry Revell 1/25 scale 1965 Chevrolet Stepside pickup. He shaved the front and rear bumpers, planked the bed with wood, and sprayed the body with Rust-Oleum paint.
Bruce Kridler built his Revell 1/25 scale Shelby Cobra 427 S/C mostly out of the box, aside from opening the doors and trunk. He gave the stealthy model its beautiful finish by airbrushing it Tamiya Metallic Gray.
Tom Kren dropped the chassis on his Moebius Models 1/25 scale 1954 Hudson Hornet to make it “look cool and low.” He used MCW White Primer, airbrushed MCW Aqua, and topped it off with Testors One Coat Clear.
To model a NASCAR Darlington throwback scheme for Kyle Larson, Gene King built the Revell 1/25 scale Chevy Camaro SS. He lowered the chassis, modified the seat and dash, made a window net with masking tape, and added roll bar padding. To finish the model, he painted it with white primer and then airbrushed it with Tamiya Gloss Black and Createx Fluorescent Green.
Ted Quinn helped finish a resin 1/25 scale 1957 Chevrolet sedan delivery pro-street project for a friend who passed away, including repainting, wiring, and assembly. He tubbed the rear wheel wells to fit the massive slicks and finished with PPG colors.
Scott Burggraf built a Lindberg 1/25 scale ’53 Ford Victoria and added spark plug wires. He finished it with Krylon Short Cuts aerosol paint and a clear coat.
