Once again, Zanesville, Ohio, hosted the Y-City Scale Model Contest, but it wasn’t without a hiccup. This year, with only a couple of months’ notice, organizers had to reschedule the contest and push it back a week to Oct. 5, 2024. As it turns out, the Zanesville Marathon was scheduled to use the show’s venue as a staging area. But even with juggling the dates, the show was able to host close to 400 models. Here’s a selection of what modelers brought to the tables.
Scott Liggett built this groovy MPC 1/25 scale FlipOut Mustang mostly box stock with upgraded rear tires for a totally ‘60s Mustang street machine. He applied the kit decals and freehanded the window trim before coating the car with Tamiya Clear.
This AMT 1/25 scale Ala-Kart rode in with Bob Lorenz. He built the kit box stock and painted it Tamiya Pearl White over white Tamiya primer. Bob added gold Bare-Metal Foil to make the brightwork shine.
This Moebius 1/25 scale 1953 Hudson Hornet is the work of Keith Price, who built the model box stock. He painted and masked the roof before painting the body Tamiya Italian Red for “a straight build of a ‘50s classic.”
Chris Harrison built a Revell 1/25 scale 2021 Ford Bronco with a blown engine. He airbrushed on a black base, followed with House of Kolor Brandywine, and then finished with 2K clear.
Todd Wingerter turned a Revell 1/25 scale ‘48 Ford police coupe into a salt flats racer. He primed the body light gray before airbrushing it with Testors Colors by Boyd Pacific Blue enamel.
Steve Courtney added “a lot of photo-etched [metal] and 3D-printed” parts to his Revell 1/25 scale Custom Cadillac lowrider. For the colorful finish, he used House of Kolor Kandy, Xcotic Colours Candee, and Cande Shop pearl paints.
To depict “Motown Missile,” Vern Heizer added Slixx decals to a flat black Lindberg 1/25 scale Pro Stock Dodge Dakota Sport.
Gary Harrison painted his MPC 1/25 scale Cobra chopper metallic lime green with a Harbor Freight airbrush.
This model was painted in an unconventional way: Juan Concepcion hydro-dipped the snakeskin on his AMT 1/25 scale 1967 Chevelle pro street after priming, sanding, painting, and clear-coating the sweet ride.
Craig Kinley extended the frame sideboards, scratchbuilt the bed, and added aftermarket tires to his AMT 1/25 scale 1953 Ford F-100 pickup. He scratchbuilt a trailer to make the truck ready for a landscaping business. Craig painted the vehicle with Tamiya spray paint and dull coat and weathered the truck with chalk.
This Moebius 1/25 scale ‘65 Chevrolet Chevy II Nova gasser made by John DePaola has added seat belts and Glass Pack window tint. He primed, painted, and clear-coated the car with Tamiya products. John also masked and wet-sanded to get the finish just right.
Dave Huddle put the Revell 1/25 scale ‘41 Willys early body on a pro street chassis to create this cool ride. For the finish, he sprayed a PPG base coat and clear.
CT Inman added spark plugs, a custom shifter, and tires to a Lindberg 1/25 scale 1934 Ford pickup. He primed it and finished the car with Krylon Matte Gray and Flat White.
Foose pickup wheels and tires added to Bud Fowle’s Revell 1/25 scale ‘57 Ford Del Rio Ranch Wagon make the Tamiya two-tone blue vehicle shine.
For a typical UK firetruck, Phil Donaldson Jr. built an Italeri 1/24 scale Land Rover fire truck box stock and marked it for Hampshire Fire Service. He primed the model and painted it with MCW lacquer.
