Scott Hoover built his MPC 1/25 scale 1971 Dodge Demon box stock. He primed the car with a silver base, added some metal flake paint, then candy yellow and PPG Clear Coat to top it off.
Jesse Talmage made a replica of his friend’s old shop car from Cornfield Customs using a Hubley 1/24 scale 1960 Ford Country Sedan wagon. He lowered the suspension, added wheels and tires from his spares, Parts by Parks hubcaps, a scratchbuilt seat cover, and STS decals. Jesse said that the base coat sprayed on rough, helping him weather the second layer, along with real rust and Tamiya powders
This Revell 1/25 scale 1970 Dodge Charger R/T drove in with Shane Harrold. He lowered the car, added Z-man wheels and tires, and wired the engine. That sweet purple color is PPG Grape Soda under PPG Clear sprayed from a Paasche airbrush.
Bob Lorenz’s AMT 1/16 scale Chevy Bel Air sits on top of an Entz Racing 3D-printed chassis. To finish the car, Bob primed and then painted with MCW Red and Black lacquers.
Tony Dean filled the seams of his AMT 1/24 scale Batmobile 1989 movie car and added lights and a jet engine. He finished the famous superhero’s ride with black lacquer topped with a satin clear coat. Tony airbrushed the side details and placed it on a base to hide the wires and button for the lights.
Gary Kulchock built the Revell 1/25 scale Gran Turismo that he calls The Frog. After extensively modifying the kit, Gary airbrushed it with a black base coat, covered it with green, and weathered it mostly with pastels.
Dave Huddle’s Johan 1/25 scale Rambler sits on a Bob Glidden T-bird chassis. He added plug wires and a parachute cord. Dave masked the vehicle and painted the scheme with Tamiya colors.
Mark Wheeler converted a Revell 1/25 scale Ford Mustang GT/CS coupe to a convertible. He made “lots of modifications” and added a resin hood, sport bar, and Keith Marks decals to replicate the 1/1 car. Mark chose Tamiya primer and paints, masking off the black on the hood, painting the rest Pure White, and topping it all with a clear coat.
This 3D-printed 1/24 scale mini modified puller came from Gavin Foster. He popped in a top-fuel engine and dressed the rodded tractor with Tamiya paints and STS decals.
Tom Jackson added an Iceman Collection Widebody kit to his Revell 1/25 scale 1971 Mustang Boss 351. He airbrushed on Scale Finishes ’73 Mustang Pale Yellow for the bright finish.
The box stock Monogram 1/24 scale 1981 Miller Mustang GTX by Ron Francis wears Tamiya lacquers and Speedline decals. Ron said he wanted to make “a cool model of a very cool Mustang!”
Marcus Jennings made a Tamiya 1/6 scale Suzuki GSX1100S Katana into a café racer by stripping off the front faring. He also added a working chain and 3D-printed sprockets. Marcus finished the bike in Tamiya lacquer.
Jason Foster replaced the wheels of the Atlantis 1/24 scale Son of Troublemaker Chevy El Camino Funny Car with ones that he said looked better. He painted the vehicle with fingernail polish.
Jennifer Lawson upgraded her AMT 1/24 scale 1933 Willys panel van into a gasser wagon with spark-plug wires, an “aftermarket decal girl,” and computer-made “Poison Ivy” and ivy decals. She painted the two-tone scheme with Tamiya Pearl Green and Pearl White over white primer. Jennifer wanted to make “a gasser driven by a girl.”
SK decals in KohR Motorsports team livery top Gene King’s Tamiya 1/24 scale Ford Mustang GT4. He gave it an Iceman Collections engine, added a Hobby Design detail kit, and scratchbuilt an engine compartment for the curbside kit. Gene understandably did “lots of masking” while applying Tamiya paints for this detailed scheme created by his son, Todd King.
Phil Donaldson Jr. started with an AMT 1/25 scale Model A, wired the engine, and added aftermarket seat-belt hardware and interior details for his Dynamic Speed Shop 1929 Model A B/SR. He finished the model with Testors White from a rattle can and added weathering and washes on the engine.
Steve Courtney wired and installed a 3D-printed motor and wheels on his Revell Pro Modeler 1/25 scale 1969 Dodge Daytona. He airbrushed the car with 1970 Plymouth Lime automotive paint over 5 Star primer and topped it with Amtech 2K Clear and CSI Polish.
Chip Wamsley reworked the lower front vents of his Protar 1/24 scale Porsche 956 1983 LeMans Champion. The finish is white Tamiya primer under Tamiya White lacquer.
A gift for a friend in Brazil who let Steve drive his car, Steve Keith created this Tamiya 1/25 scale Ferrari 360 Modena with numerous added photo-etched metal parts and a scratchbuilt exhaust. He primed the car with pink Tamiya primer, painted it Splash Paints Rosso Corsa Red topped with a lacquer clear coat, and weathered the belly pan.
Tim Melick built his AMT 1/25 scale 1969 Camaro straight out of the box and painted with several light coats of enamel and lacquer. Tim said he wanted to make “something you might see on the street.”
Linda Jones painted her box stock Polar Lights 1/25 scale Godzilla’s Go Cart with flat black primer and freehanded the finish with Folk Art acrylic paints. She said she loves Godzilla, “and had to do it.” Linda hopes to get one of King Kong to have them drag race. How fun!
Todd Wingerter scratchbuilt a chassis to mount the Westinghouse jet motor of his AMT/ERTL 1/25 scale Barracuda Jet Funny Car. He painted the vehicle with MCW Turbine Bronze Metallic and finished it as a replica of the Walt Arfons jet Funny Car driven by Fred Sibley.
Mark Harmon made a Tamiya 1/12 scale Porsche 934 Valliant and added Hiroboy aluminum wheels. He lightly weathered the chassis, and white Tamiya primer serves as a base for Tamiya Cobalt, decals, and 2K clear.
Seth Brock went all-out customizing a Salvinos JR 1/25 scale Keith Rocco Racing Asphalt Modified race car. He added a custom grille, custom seat harness, foam seat, custom window net, a heat-stained exhaust, spark-plug wires, and battery cables.
Scott Burggraf’s AMT 1/25 scale 1970 Monte Carlo sports wheels and tires from his spares and a lowered stance. He also added plug wires, brake lines, fuel lines, cables, a battery, and a booster hose, and picked out the trim with Bare-Metal Foil. Scott used a gray primer before painting Krylon Foil Metallic for the silver and blue-green two-tone finish.
Keith Price added a Model Car Garage vinyl roof kit to his otherwise box-stock Revell 1/25 scale 1969 Dodge Charger R/T. He sprayed it Model Master Sublime Green, applied decals, then applied Testors Wet-Look Clear for a car that matched his “love for classic Mopar muscle.”
The design for Darrell Rischert’s build of a Revell 1/25 scale ’66 Chevy Suburban came from Gary Campesi. Lowered, narrowed, with a Corvette rear end and now sporting a bike over the mid-mounted engine, this is a Suburban unlike any other. Darrell finished off this amazing model with craft acrylics.
This colorfully decaled Tamiya 1/24 scale Mercedes AMG GT3 came with James Tester. He added a resin front and rear and aftermarket 2022 Goodsmile decals. James airbrushed white lacquer, masked for the black, and applied decals before adding 2K clear and polishing. He said he wanted the challenge of a Goodsmile Racing GT3 with a fun decal wrap scheme.
Mike Garrett says there are simply “not enough pro streets out there!” He built the AMT 1/25 scale 1966 Fairlane 427 as a pro street car, tubbed the chassis and interior, opened the trunk, and installed a Boss 429 motor from a Johan Comet.
Kreg Woods cut open the teardrop hood, and added custom wheels, filters, and an antenna to his Trumpeter 1/25 scale 1964 Ford Falcon Sprint hardtop stock plus. He primed with Mr. Hobby Gray and topped that with MCW Candy Apple Red enamel.
James Loudcoslager finished this 1/24 scale ’64 Nova slot car gasser with a pearl orange for a vintage appearance.
John Strick added aftermarket wheels and tires and Bare-Metal Foil to his AMT 1/25 scale 1961 Mercury. He painted the car with OPI nail polish over Tamiya primer.
This colorful car came to the contest with Cody Hoce. He turned a Moebius Models 1/25 scale 1955 Chrysler C300 into a gasser with a 3D-printed front suspension, placed photo-etched metal emblems, and plumbed and wired the engine. The colorful scheme is Tropical Glitz Comet Silver and several candy colors.
Rexton Kemp built his Tamiya 1/12 scale Team Suzuki ECSTAR GSX-RR 2020 out of the box. For the finish, he airbrushed Gravity Paints over the kit-supplied masks.
A brass chassis, resin tires, and machined wheels round out Clay Kemp’s scratchbuilt 1/24 scale Kyle Larson USAC Silver Crown. The finish includes Tamiya and Alclad II paints over Tamiya primer topped by Omni Clear.
Jeffrey Richards hauled in his Moebius Models 1/25 scale ’66 Ford F-100 Custom Cab four-wheel drive farm truck. He wired the six-cylinder engine, upgraded the truck with Scenes Unlimited tires, and painted the classic two-tone with Tamiya lacquers.
Rick Bumgardner detailed the engine bay of a Tamiya 1/24 scale Lotus Super 7 Series II. He painted it with Tamiya lacquers through a Grex airbrush and lightly weathered the vehicle.
Sean Svendsen was inspired by Bill Stroppe-style Broncos for his AMT 1/25 scale 2021 Ford Bronco. He lifted the suspension, 3D-printed the light bar, and topped it with Tamiya Orange and a 2K clear.
To build a “whimsical vehicle,” Glenn Marek scratchbuilt the body and suspension for his 1/25 scale Cyclops II as he saw it in Road & Track magazine. He primed the little car with auto primer and painted it using a spray can.
Tom Kren lowered his AMT 1/25 scale 1960 Ford F-100 and added aftermarket parts. That classy, cool color is MCW Green Pearl under MCW Clear.
For the 2024 24-hour build, Randy Derr made a Monogram 1/24 scale Sizzler dragster to which he added fuel lines and ignition wires. He employed Tamiya spray paint and airbrushed fingernail polish to get exactly the look he wanted.
